Loughborough UAV

We are a team of Engineering Students from Loughborough University who design, build, and fly Unmanned Aerial Systems to compete in the IMechE UAS Challenge

  • Odonata 2021-2022

Best design award. IMechE UAS Challenge 2021/2022, coming 4th overall out of 34 international teams.

  • Manta 2020-2021

Operational Supportability, Innovation, Design, Safety and 2nd place prize awards for team Loughborough UAV at the IMeche UAS Challenge 2020/2021.

  • Titan 2019-2020

8th place out of 38 international teams. 4th in Business Proposition and 4th in Media & Engagement.

Meet the Departments

The purpose of the airframes department is to produce an effective and cohesive design concept to be manufactured, tested, and iterated for the IMechE UAS Challenge competition in 2023. The Airframes department consists of Aerodynamics and Structures sub-departments

Airframes

State-of-the-art image recognition system capable of completing the Area Search to high levels of accuracy. Fundamentally achieved by simulated concepts built using Python. In addition, enabling detection through Computer Vision techniques such as image thresholding and contour detection.

Image Recognition

Systems department responsibilities include everything and anything to do with the electrical systems on board the aircraft, creating any testbeds for setting up the control systems and ultimately getting the final UAV flying effectively for the design mission brief and the competition.

Systems

Combining engineering problem-solving with hands-on work, the manufacturing team is a great place to develop as an engineer and gain further insight into the processes that are used in the industry.

Manufacturing

The Media and Communications department provides sight into our operations as well as the popularisation of our project in the university. Also, our department is responsible for any livery, logo designs and any other creative aspects.
